Research and Development Center
The Minneapolis Research and Development Center project entailed the consolidation of three similar research and development operations from four buildings in the Twin Cities metro area into one central location. This location is now Cargill's North American hub for its global network of food and ingredient research and has improved the efficiency of Cargill's Research and Development area. The Center features molecular biology labs, advanced analytical and materials research labs, test kitchens and a pilot production plant.
The project was delivered via a Design-Build project delivery method that featured real-time cost estimating during design to allow informed decisions to be made during design and limiting the “value engineering” near the end of the design process. PEGASUS GROUP led the design and construction planning for consolidated research labs and pilot plant operations.
PEGASUS GROUP also led the extensive planning and coordination for the de-installation, moving and reinstallation of scientific research and pilot plant equipment. With business units moving from multiple locations, coordination with existing equipment to be moved as well as new equipment to be acquired was critical. The ability to coordinate the relocation of that equipment with not only the stakeholders, equipment service providers and moving company, but also the mechanical and electrical engineers and design-build mechanical and electrical subcontractors during design was critical to the nearly seamless transition of scientific equipment.
Cargill has a process of having independent third-party evaluations of all of its major construction projects globally on an annual basis. This project was not only the top ranked project for 2015-16, it is at the time the highest ranked project ever for Cargill. The evaluation is based upon many factors such as budget performance, schedule performance, stakeholder satisfaction, construction safety performance, etc.
