Amphitheater and Commons Interior Renovation
Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College, Cloquet, Minnesota The Amphitheater and Commons are the central community areas at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College. The primary goals of this renovation were to improve seating, safety and aesthetics while integrating seamlessly with the space's original features. With the use of Minnesota Higher Education Asset Preservation and Replacement (HEAPR) funds, the carpet was replaced with terrazzo flooring, walls, trim and ceilings were refurbished, acoustic ceiling tiles were installed, the bench seating area was refurbished, audio video and lighting systems and controls were updated and the food service space was enclosed. A prominent feature of this renovation was implementing a flooring design that could be used as a form of storytelling. The terrazzo floor design is made up of three primary sections. The amphitheater section features two swimming otters, inspired by the painting “The Twins” by renowned Anishinaabe artist Karen Savage-Blue. The second element features the St. Louis River Estuary. The final portion extends along the wall of windows facing the medicine garden, featuring braided sweetgrass and the 13-moon lunar cycle. Budget $1,900,000 |
